Front-wheel Drive or in short known as FWD is a technical arrangement which mainly focuses on the type of engine and the transmission. FWD is of three types. They are longitudinal, mid-engine type mounting and transverse. The differences mainly depend on whether the model of the car is an old or a new one. Since 1990s most of the cars use this FWD or to say front-wheel drive technology. Before that Rear wheel drive or RWD technology was in use. Nowadays RWD technology is being used for special vehicles.
In front-wheel type technology, the engine of the car generally controls only the front wheels of the car. With the update of technology over the years, engines which are transversely installed started gaining popularity. In fact, Front-wheel drive cars mostly use the engines which are transversely installed. There are many useful features of this engine which include cooling fans which are operated electronically. The engine has got drive shafts which are connected through CV joints as the front wheel will be driven through that. There was also a transmission arrangement which uses the mounting.
While explaining the use of front-wheel technology the car engine experts have stated that the main advantage of using the transversely installed engine is all about safety. The main reason is that these engines have a big crumple zone when there is a head on collision of the vehicles. This is very much essential as with these fast moving cars, numbers of accidents is going up every month and hence a precautionary measure was very much necessary. Some of the reasons why most of the automobile manufacturers are shifting to front-wheel engine are they are cheaper, smaller in size and very much fuel efficient, light in weight and demand for horsepower is also very less. In one word, they are very much budget and space friendly.
